What to Look for in a Gamer Logo Template

Much like crafting a legendary weapon in an RPG, forging a gamer logo requires specific components. Here’s your treasure map to a great gamer logo template:

  1. Dynamic & Bold Design: There’s no place for the mundane in gaming. Seek templates with energetic, eye-catching designs that mirror the virtual adrenaline.
  2. Customizability: Just as no two avatars are alike, your logo must be unique. Ensure the template allows you to tweak colors, fonts, and symbols.
  3. Scalability: From vast guild banners to compact in-game emblems, your logo should remain crisp and distinct.
  4. Theme Relevance: If you specialize in a certain game genre, like fantasy, racing, or FPS, the template should resonate with that vibe.
  5. Format Diversity: Gamers traverse both PC realms and mobile territories. Ensure the template supports varied digital formats, from PNG to SVG.

The Lore of Gamer Logos

Dive into the archives, and you’ll find that gamer logos aren’t just symbols. They’re a tapestry of tales, prowess, and identity. What makes them distinct?

  • Symbolism: Often, they encompass imagery relevant to the gaming world – think joysticks, controllers, headsets, or iconic in-game items.
  • Energy: Given the dynamic nature of games, these logos tend to be vibrant, often using sharp contrasts and vivid colors.
  • Typography: The font isn’t merely about legibility. It’s about aesthetics, often bearing a futuristic, bold, or fantastical style.
  • Adaptability: Given the various platforms gamers operate on, from Twitch streams to YouTube channels or eSports tournaments, these logos need to fit seamlessly across contexts.

Retro games still bring a smile to fans both young and not-so-young. That was evidenced by the wild popularity of the NES Classic Edition and the Super NES Classic Edition, among others. Heck, even Atari has announced plans for a console.

People love the simplicity of a pick-up-and-play game. They also love the childhood memories associated with old school titles. Plus, the thought of making new memories by playing with friends and family is still a strong draw.

Designers in particular seem eternally gaga over the likes of Mario, Pokémon, and Sonic. In fact, a jaunt through CodePen shows us there are several odes to classic video games made with good old HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript. Here are 10 of our favorites:

CSS Q*bert by Patrick Cox

The strange little orange creature named Q*bert was all the rage back in the 1980s, even starring in his own Saturday morning cartoon. While this is just a CSS animation, any mention of Q*bert is a good thing.

Enduro HTML5 Game by Rafael Castrocouto

Enduro is a racing game originally released back in 1983 for the Atari 2600. No worries if you don’t have a spare cartridge at home – you can play a recreation of the game with this HTML5 version!

Media Query Super Mario Bros. by Ashley Watson-Nolan

CodePen is absolutely full of Mario-related goodness. Unfortunately, there’s no way to spotlight all of them. But Media Query Mario is one of the coolest tributes we’ve seen. It’s an animated remake of Super Mario Bros. 3. The only catch is that you have to resize your browser to between 320 and 420 pixels to watch.

CSS Sonic the Hedgehog by Ryan Petersen

Nothing said Sega like good old Sonic. Originally introduced back in 1991 for the Sega Genesis console, the little blue guy sped his way into many hearts (where, like Mario, he still resides). He’s also kept up his endurance, as seen in this CSS animation.

The Legend of Zelda by Stix

Zelda was one of those games you could play for hours on end. Thanks to the original’s battery backup included on the cartridge, it was one of the few games of the era that let you save your progress. Here we see Link repurposed nicely for a 404 screen.

Asteroids by Artem N

A true classic, Asteroids goes all the way back to 1979. And it’s still just as addictive as it was back in the day. It goes to show fancy graphics only get you so far. You can play right from your browser with this HTML5 Canvas version.

HTML5 Pac-Man by Hellokatili

The little yellow dot-eater is one of the most recognizable game characters of all time. He (and later, his lady friend) became an arcade sensation. Here, you can chew up dots and outrun ghosts in your browser with this fun HTML5 offering.

Galaxian by Adonis Domingues Vieira

Another spaceship shooter from the ‘70s (1979, to be exact), Galaxian was one of the rare games for its time that was as fun to play at home as it was in the arcade. The otherworldly sound effects were great for driving parents to insanity. Here’s a HTML5/JS edition.

JavaScript Pong by Gabriel Dubé

If you had Pong in your home, you probably got bored after about 20 minutes. But, as one of the first really significant video games, it paved the way for everything to come. Enjoy a JS version of the game below.

HTML5 Canvas Pokémon by Panagiotis Vourtsis

Pokémon is the second best-selling game franchise of all time – trailing only Mario. From its humble beginnings for the Nintendo Game Boy, all the way to the hysteria of Pokémon Go, the franchise has remained a cultural phenomenon. Below is a decidedly retro HTML5 Canvas game.

Going Back to the Future

It’s amazing to think that, decades after their debuts, these games still resonate. But not only are the examples above a testament to the power of classic games, but it also shows how far web development has come in a relatively short amount of time.

Complex games and animations can now be created on the web with just a bit of code. Now, who’s up for some Pac-Man?

Board games are a favorite pastime for all ages. When you think about it, they were the original portable gaming systems. Take one over to a friend’s house or get the family together for a game night. You can play anywhere, anytime.

And their impact may be greater than you’d think. They’ve played a role in helping us develop decision-making skills and learning to follow the rules. So many basic life lessons, all wrapped up in something fun.

Here, we’ve put together a collection of online homages to some popular board games. Some are playable, some aren’t. But they all feature some compelling design and coding techniques that are worth a look. And if you happen to spend a few hours playing games, all the better!

Checkers, Anyone?

One of the simplest games is also among the most enjoyable. For this playable example, you’ll want to grab a friend (or try to outsmart yourself). As with the physical game, the red and black teams take turns. As you click on a checker, your options for moves are shaded on the board. Fans of Connect 4 will also want to check out a similar snippet.

Dynamic Chutes

Among the very first games I learned as a child was Chutes and Ladders. It’s incredibly basic and makes for a great introduction to playing games. Even better was that I got to pass along the tradition to my own child. Here, we have a dynamically-generated game board. Each time you refresh the page, the paths change.

Mancala

A two-player game that can be traced back to the 7th century, Mancala is one of the oldest on Earth. Surely, its earliest players never envisioned playing on a screen. But this interactive example allows you to do just that. Try to collect your opponents’ pieces and see who comes out on top.

That’ll be $1,000, Mr. Monopoly

Nothing teaches you about the benefits of a good investment quite like Monopoly. That feeling you get when an opponent lands on one of your properties – you know you have them right where you want them. This masterfully recreated game board was built with CSS Grid and looks exactly like the real thing. You can almost hear the dice rolling.

Jenga!

It takes a steady hand to play Jenga. One false move and your carefully-crafted tower goes to pieces. Frustrating, indeed. But there’s no pressure here. This Jenga-inspired loading animation simply puts together a tower using Vue.js. Sure, it comes apart at the end. But at least there aren’t little wooden logs all over the floor afterwards.

Top Tiles

Scrabble seems to be both universally loved and timeless. It also provides a great way to both learn and, ahem, invent words. As a tribute to the great game, here are some very detailed letter tiles. Notice the fine woodgrain textures. And, if you want to ensure that a word that you’re playing is valid, this simple dictionary will help.

You Sunk My Battleship

Back in the day, Battleship seemed almost high-tech. You had all of these little pieces and, if you were lucky, a board that made sounds (that really made things fun). There are a ton of Battleship-themed snippets out there. However, this one had a wonderful simplicity that lends itself to online play. Type in a letter/number position, click the arrow and find out if you’ve made a hit.

Risky Business

The game of “strategic conquest”, Risk takes a real time commitment to play – not to mention a smart strategy. It even inspired an episode of “Seinfeld”. The game’s complexity makes this snippet all the more impressive. Play against AI and see if you can rule the world.

Game On

Because board games have had an impact on our society, they also make for a terrific playground for developers. The simplest games allow you to test your working knowledge of CSS and JS. They provide you with a knowable and realistic end result to work towards.

As your knowledge grows, you can then move on to some of the more complex games and add in extras such as artificial intelligence. Regardless of your level, these games can help you sharpen your skills while having fun at the same time.

Usability is a condition of anything we interact with: your faucet, a web site’s navigation, elevator buttons, a mobile app, or a toilet. Tangible or intangible, the most intuitive means of interacting with something to achieve the desired result is what it’s all about. In the case of a video game, it’s…well, what is it all about? How does usability play a role in gaming?

I’m a bit of a gamer myself, and I’ve been playing a lot of Dead Space lately. The Dead Space franchise is largely known for its sci-fi/horror genre mix, and immersing you in an atmospheric, terrifying experience. While locations and plot vary per game, one of the franchise’s constants is it how it completely forgoes the concept of a HUD, integrating many of the interface elements directly into the player’s armored suit.

The spinal column-based meter represents the player’s health, and the radial gauge denotes stasis, which effectively freezes an object in place for a limited duration. As health lowers from taking damage, the blue bars dissipate downward, concurrently turning yellow when you’re in serious trouble, and ultimately shifting to red when near death. Leveraging conventional color usage here (yellow for caution, red for danger) is just smart. The stasis gauge follows similar logic.

Similarly, as a player fires their weapon, remaining primary and secondary ammunition count is clearly displayed on the frame itself. This smart integration of essential data feedback directly into a game mechanic once again makes the concept of a HUD irrelevant. You’re kept in the moment, and immersion is seamless. An attachment projecting a laser target in the below example also inherits the “action” blue.

Beyond organic integration of HUD elements, color is leveraged as a visual cue throughout the game to denote areas of action or user focus. The blue used on the previously discussed suit-based gauges, in particular, is smartly integrated all through the various environments you interact with. Anything that can be lifted or moved via kinesis, any control panel that can be engaged, or any oxygen tank than can be grabbed to refuel your supply while traversing open space, all clearly display the same blue. In a game series which, by and large, has you in intentional dimly lit environments (to facilitate scaring the crap out of you,) having these visual cues throughout still makes these key interactions usable ones.

Let’s go a step further, and get all retro up in this…article. Usability as a pillar in video game interactions has been a staple for decades. Even in 8-bit NES form, being able to discern what it is I can interact with — amongst all the other movement and distractions on-screen — has always been at the core of a positive gaming experience. Consider the below example of some iconography culled from classics you better be instantly familiar with:

The above scenario is out of any real context, obviously: inclusive of movement, sound, or actual game environments. What we see though is a visual consistency across these items that is intended to train the user (gamer) that “these are things I need to interact with”. Beyond color consistencies, some icons may pulse between colors in a similar fashion. Some may move in a solely unique manner that organically trains us to know, amongst all other sensory noise, that the item offers an upgrade, power-up, or some other benefit.

The best implementations of usability are transparent to the user — functioning in an intuitive manner, and facilitating organic learning of systems. In the case of video gaming, this can make or break an enjoyable experience. In the case of the crotch on your jeans, this can make or break an efficient opening/closing process in the washroom. I’m looking at you, button-fly closure.

The gaming industry has undergone some mindblowing changes in just a few decades. It seems like only last year that Super Nintendo games were skyrocketing into stardom. Yet now in closing of 2011 we’re seeing brilliant HD graphics running through custom PC rigs, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and the Nintendo Wii consoles.

Even with such advancing technology you can never forget the classics that brought us to this era. I’m a big fan of nostalgic/retro art and true gamers will love to spend some time looking over the past. I’ve collected a beautiful showcase of retro video game posters, advertisements, box art, and other graphics media. I hope this gallery can inspire memories of simpler times in video gaming history. Be sure to let us know your thoughts and stories in the discussion area below!

The Super Nintendo was released in Japan during November 1990 later coming to the United States in 1991. The console has seen over 700 game titles released since its birth and brings a lot of retro styles to the table. Looking back now we can see just how abundant these games are with musical tones, vast landscapes, detailed storylines, and incredible box art.

Below I’ve accounted for 50 amazing box art designs from classic Super Nintendo games. Many of these originate from Japan but there are quite a few titles exclusive to North American media. Notice the vast differences between game artwork even 20 years ago compared with today. I personally derive a lot of design inspiration from “old school” games, especially SNES official artwork.

The characters and background scenery may be enough to spur that brilliant idea into fruition. Consider yourself open to illustrations, graphics design, website layouts, and anything which may flow into your creative process! Similarly if you have questions or examples of other box artwork please leave your words in the comments section below.
